If we want every Georgia student reading on grade level, then we have to give those students the resources they need to be successful. One of the key resources they need is knowledge about the natural world, that is Science! The more young students know about the world around them, the better able they will be to understand texts in their everyday lives and on the Milestones reading assessments. That's right: science learning is a key to reading achievement! Join Judie Beccaro, the Georgia DOE Content Integration Special Education Program Specialist for Science, and Janetta Greenwood, Director of the Fernbank Science Center, as they examine Milestones ELA items in grades 3-5 to show you what the research tells us about the key role that knowledge plays in reading comprehension. If we are shortchanging our elementary students in time to learn science effectively, then we are shortchanging their ability to reach their potential as readers and learners, in general. This session will help teachers advocate in their schools and districts to support student learning in science and literacy. This is the second in a series of webinars throughout the 2023-2024 school year that will focus on the important role of science learning in literacy achievement. Visit georgiascienceteacher.org to see an updated list of panelists for the event. This session will be hosted on Zoom, and login information will be provided to individuals who register for the event.
