Supporting Excellent Science Teaching for Georgia

District 2 Director: Alec Johnson

I am honored and excited to represent Northeast GA as the District 2 Director.  I grew up in Hall County, attended the University of Georgia for undergrad, Georgia State for my Masters in Education, and I currently work in Morgan County so I am immensely familiar with our district and its diverse needs.  I have taught Chemistry, IB and AP Physics, Physical Science, and Astronomy at Morgan County High School since 2012.  I have also taught night school classes for all science subjects at Foothills Charter High School - Madison Campus since 2017 and am now the Regional Instructional Services Coordinator for the district.  As a Project-Based Learning coach at MCHS and Instructional Coach for Foothills, I have learned to help teachers succeed and develop diverse curriculums to fit all subject areas.  In the summer 2018, I was honored with the opportunity to work as an educational consultant for the NASA Exploration Ground Systems Program at Kennedy Space Center.  At NASA, I created physics lessons related to NASA’s upcoming Artemis missions by working with engineers and scientists in the program.  In 2020, I was selected by the SETI Institute to fly on the NASA SOFIA Aircraft as an Airborne Astronomy Ambassador to bring stronger astronomy resources to my district.  My main goal as District 2 Director is to support teachers in finding innovative ways to connect science content to real-world phenomena by finding and fostering partnerships with professionals in their communities and beyond.

District 2 counties include Banks, Barrow, Dawson, Clarke, Elbert, Fannin, Franklin, Greene, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Jackson, Lumpkin, Madison, Morgan, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, Walton, and White
