Supporting Excellent Science Teaching for Georgia

District 9 Director: Kristina Istre

Hello, my name is Kristina Istre (pronounced "East").  I am currently an 8th grade Physical Science and STEM teacher at ARJ Health Science and Engineering Magnet School in Augusta, Georgia in Richmond County for the 2020-2021 school year. I was very honored to be elected the District 9 Representative. I hope to offer professional development opportunities to members in my district and to be an advocate for any needs of the educators and administrators in my district.

I have been teaching a variety of grade levels in Richmond County for 24 years (Wow! I can't believe how time has flown).  I was named the 2016 GSTA Middle School Teacher of the year. I am proud to say that I have a fantastic 19 year old son named Nicholas and a 22 year old nephew who graduated from Georgia Southern and is now a reporter for the Augusta Chronicle.   I am also known as "One of the Science Sisters" because my twin sister, Donita Legoas (the GSTA Middle School Rep.), is also a science teacher at my school.

I am excited to be elected the new District 9 Representative and I hope to raise our current membership in GSTA. I am confident that with hard work, Science education in the state of Georgia will continue to be a focus and will help students to realize its importance in their future success. Everyone should remember the fact that "Science Matters!"
