Supporting Excellent Science Teaching for Georgia

District 1 Director: Lisa Benson

email me

Hello Northwest Georgia GSTA members!  My name is Lisa Benson and I am the current GSTA District 1 Director as well as the District Science Instructional Specialist/Coordinator for Chattooga County Schools. If we don't know each other already, I hope that will change soon -- send me an email introducing yourself!

I was born and raised in the metro Atlanta area, but left the ATL traffic jam after high school and never looked back. Since then, I've lived and worked in several Georgia towns (special shout-out to my friends in Athens, GA) as well as Florida and Alabama. For the last decade-plus, however, my family has called the lovely valleys of Chattooga County our home. Tucked away in the far northwest corner of the state, we enjoy the quiet life on a small farm shared with many types of animals.

Fun fact: in my 20+ years of working in education, I've taught (in some capacity) in every grade band from Kindergarten through graduate school!  Most recently, I was a science teacher and Dept. Chair at Chattooga High School. My teaching points of pride include past turns as the Chattooga County Teacher of the Year, Chattooga HS Teacher of the Year, and STAR Teacher.  As an alumna of Georgia Southern (undergrad) and The University of Georgia (post-grad), it goes without saying that I'm a huge fan of college football -- Go Dawgs!

For the last three years, I've had the pleasure of serving as the Science member of the Chattooga County School District's "Success Team."  In this role, I support curriculum and instruction for all K-12 science teachers in our school district. I truly love my job and strive to create a culture that offers top tier science instruction to the students of Chattooga County and beyond. Working with other teachers who are passionate about science is a dream come true.

Please let me know how I can support you and the science programs of GSTA District 1. Thank you very much and I look forward to hearing from you.
