Science and literacy should go hand-in-hand in the elementary classroom. Learning science builds students background knowledge and improves their reading comprehension, and reading and writing during science lessons deepens and solidifies student learning. The GaDOE literacy-based science tasks are three-dimensional science lessons that leverage literacy skills to deepen understanding of science through reading and writing. The tasks were developed by Georgia teachers under the guidance of a GaDOE team. Renee Shirley Stevens, GaDOE Science Program Specialist, and Dr. Jodi Wheeler-Toppen, author and consultant on literacy in science, will share how the tasks were developed and how you can use them in your classroom. This is the third in a series of webinars throughout the 2023-2024 school year that will focus on the important role of science learning in literacy achievement. Visit georgiascienceteacher.org to see an updated list of panelists for the event. This session will be hosted on Zoom, and login information will be provided to individuals who register for the event.
