2026 GSTA Conference Field Trips

Registration

  • Enjoy a brief presentation about the geology of kaolin and kaolin processing. Visit the open mine pits with kaolin and see all overlying geologic strata. Hunt for fossils in the Tivola Limestone.
  • Start at the Emily Parker Myers Admissions and Welcome Center. Take a walking tour through the Greek Village, different programs, the library, and JROTC.
  • Join planetary geologist R. Scott Harris as he leads a full day, multiple stop field trip to
    Stop 1: Pleasant Valley RD & Ellison Pound RD, Woodland, GA - Charnockite Melt Sheet;
    Stop 2: Sprewell Bluff WMA (West) - Uplift and Pseudotachylites; Lunch; Stop 3: South of Thomaston - Inner Ring Folds & Faults; Stop 4: Pitts Chappel RD - Ejecta Deposits; Stop 5: Mountain Springs Rd - Suevites & Spherules
  • The private tour offers an exclusive exploration of two or more of our four esteemed hangars and includes our special C-130 Experience, where participants will have inside access to a C-130 “Hercules” fuselage.
  • Join us for a captivating 2.5-hour guided tour (1:00 PM – 3:30 PM) of the YKK manufacturing facility in Macon, home to one of the world’s leading producers of fastening products. Discover YKK’s renowned vertically integrated production system, where raw materials like zinc and copper are transformed into high-quality zippers, snaps, buttons, hook-and-loop fasteners, and plastic hardware right on site.

    - NDA Requirement: All visitors will be required to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). These will be provided via iPad upon arrival.
    - Mask Policy: All unvaccinated individuals must wear a mask at all times.
    - Footwear Guidelines: Due to the nature of the manufacturing environment, only closed-toe, flat shoes are permitted on the production floor. Open-toe shoes, high heels, wedges, or raised heels of any kind are not allowed. Tennis shoes are highly recommended. Compliance: Anyone wearing incorrect footwear will not be permitted on the tour and will need to wait in the conference room until the tours are completed.
    - Device Restrictions: Cameras, cell phones, and other video recording devices are not allowed in the production areas.

2026 GSTA Conference Field Trips

Field trips to unique location destinations can fulfill your scientific curiosity, help you learn about career opportunities for your students, and expose you to authentic phenomena that can connect your students' learning to the real world. 

Register early to be sure you don't miss out! If you would like to register for multiple trips, you must register separately for each trip.  All trips will meet in the Rotunda (where registration is) 30 minutes before the field trip starts. Tickets will be distributed, and each participant is responsible for finding their own way to the venue unless specified in the field trip details. Feel free to carpool!

PLEASE NOTE: 

All field trips must have a minimum of 10 participants or they will be canceled - in this case, a full refund will be issued.  Exception: Robins Air Force Base minimum is five.

Participants will provide their own transportation to the sites.. 

No refunds can be given unless GSTA cancels the trip. 

Tickets can also be purchased during the conference at the GSTA store in the Exhibit Hall.
